The Project
Located in the heart of Sunderland’s cultural quarter the Fire Station Auditorium is a re-development of the locally loved 1907 Fire Station turning it into a 21st century venue with a 20th century twist.
We were tasked with developing a façade design that not only allowed the passage of light in through the vast glazing expanses but also held firm to surrounding buildings synonymous with this area with a striking use of terracotta baguette blades to mask the modern exterior façade. This in itself gave us many engineering challenges – not least how to support terracotta from glass!
Winner of the coveted ‘Cultural Building of the Year’ and the ‘People Choice’ awards at the prestigious Schuco Excellence Award 2022 the bar has certainly been set high. It has since gone on to win numerous other awards both local and national.
Completed in late 2021 the auditorium is now a focal point for high quality acts bringing much needed footfall into the city. It certainly makes a statement!
